Frequently Asked Questions about Personal Injury in Jackson, NJ
Although you are not required to have an attorney in order to accept a settlement, it is always advisable to have an attorney review any settlement offer you receive from the insurance company before accepting it. An experienced personal injury attorney can evaluate the settlement offer against your case to advise you as to whether it represents fair compensation for your injuries and damages. If the insurance company gives you a low offer, an attorney may be able to negotiate with the insurance adjusters to increase the value of your settlement.
Most personal injury attorneys take cases on a contingency fee basis. This means that the client will not be required to pay the attorney any money unless and until the attorney recovers compensation for the client through settlement or verdict. The attorney will also typically cover all the costs of the case, such as expert witnesses or court filing fees. Once an attorney recovers compensation for the client, he or she will deduct his or her fee (usually a percentage of the total recovery) along with reimbursement for expenses incurred by the attorney.
