Road Rage Accidents Pose Serious Threat to Safety of US Motorists

Road rage is a major problem for drivers in the US and can lead to serious car accidents.
According to a survey conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, nearly 80 percent of all US drivers got angry while operating a motor vehicle at some point in 2015. The survey found that the vast majority of American motorists express anger or aggression while driving, with this angry often manifesting in shouting at other drivers, cutting off other vehicles, or even tailgating and following too closely behind another car. Tailgating is the most common behavior associated with road rage, with around 104 million drivers committing this type of road rage each year.
The most dangerous form of road rage is expressed by drivers who actually make contact with another vehicle on the roadway or follow another car and then angrily confront the other driver. The survey results indicate that approximately eight million US drivers engage in this kind of road rage annually.
Males between the ages of 19 and 39 are the group most likely to commit road rage. In fact, men in general are three times more likely than women to instigate a road rage accident.
In the worst cases, road accidents can result in the tragic loss of life. Jurek Grabowski, the research director for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, said that drivers who become angry often lash out “in ways that could turn deadly.â€
Interestingly, most Americans are aware of the dangers posed by aggressive driving. The survey found that roughly 90 percent of US drivers view road rage as “a serious threat to their personal safety.â€
